Interactive
In this category, Ling’s work explores meaning made through direct, embodied engagement: moments when people’s actions, gestures, or voices become the material of the piece itself. Interactive games and live performances turn abstract systems, principles, and complex urban issues into something enacted by the body, using gesture and movement as an expressive, shared language between participants and public. This same idea of the body as instrument extends to work on air quality, where the act of going out into public space to sense and record air pollution becomes a performance in its own right, one that makes an otherwise invisible issue physically and collectively felt. This work also includes spaces built to be spoken to, sat with, walked through, and questioned in person, where visitors physically uncover a site’s hidden history, hold a live conversation with the more-than-human world, or harvest a seat that assigns them a climate action to embody and debate over a shared meal.
